Capilano suspension bridge, North Vancouver

Capilano suspension bridge is one of the must-visit place that all visitors would go when they are in Vancouver. It is located at North Vancouver. I went there to spend a afternoon after church service. This is not the first time for me to visit the huge suspesion bridge. I expected to see something different and new this visit. Yes, I saw the treetop advanture and took a walk to explore the life on the top of forest. While walking on the pathway, I remeber Chi-Tou(溪頭) forest recreation area in Taiwan. I think the treetop advaanture has more beauty to show than Capilano.

West Vancouver-Light house park

I went to West Vancouver to visit two famous spots today. They are Lighthouse and Amberside park. I got chance taking to a local people living there. He said that I choose right time coming to visit Vancouver in the year. Summer is really pleasant, but Winter will be raining season. From the lighthouse park, I saw Mt. Baker (in the State of Washington) pretty clear. Also, I enjoy moment of quite sitting and staring at English bay.

British Columbia: the best place on earth

British Columbia is celebarting its 150 year anniversary this year. A lot of celebration activities are going on at different locations across BC. Actually, Vancouver has been elected as the most suitable place to live on earth couple times. I guess most visitors will nod their head when they come to visit the city for few days. I took this skytrain picture at Joyce station where is close to the place I stay.

Terry Fox, a Simon Fraser UNiversity graduate, British Columbia

I visited Somon Fraser Univeristy (SFU) at the city of Burnaby today. SFU is mid-size university, and it actually is a well-known university in Canada. I was impressed by a huge complex on campus. Ir seems to me that most colleges and offices are located in a one huge building. I also saw a sculpture of Terry Fox, a Simon Fraser graduate. His story really touches me. Here is a brief introduction form Terry Fox foundation. " Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, a community near Vancouver on Canada's west coast. An active teenager involved in many sports, Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977.
While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. It was a journey that Canadians never forgot. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22. The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning. To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world. "

Official Visit to Vancouver Public Library

I offcially conducted my reseach today at Vancouver Public Library(VPL). I really appreciate Chris's (left on the picture) arrangement. She invited 6 staff coming to a meeting room. We then had 90 mins focus group section to discuss my research questions with regard to Information Literacy taining at BC's public libraries. It was really helpful. I will go back to VPL again to get more in-depth understandings and tour the library next week.

New Westminster

I took a stroll on the broadwalk along the Fraser river in New Westminister, a satellite city of Vancouver. It was lovely and enjoyful, especially I saw those cozy houses on the river side and people jogging on broadwalk. This city is the first city eastblished in the province of British Columbia according to the tour book of Candada traveling. "New Westminster has a wonderful history and heritage. In 1859, it was selected as the first capital of the new colony of British Columbia and officially named the "City of New Westminster' by Queen Victoria, after her favourite part of London. From this naming by the Queen, the City gained its nickname, "The Royal City", and became the first city in Western Canada." Nice to have a walk before sunset!

Wellingdon Church

Sunday is the day that Christians pay tribute to God. I went to the Willingdon Chursch at Burnaby. It is a big church in terms of the number of worshiping people. The pastor delivered a powerful message this morning, especially he talked about a story of Fred Smith, the founder of Federal Express His dream to form a deliver compnay was almost an impossible work, but he did it and became a very successful business man. We should never measure people by his/her strength. The most important thing is how big our heart is and it will help us to reach our goal.

North Vancouver

I decideded to visit North Vancouver today. Although I have been there twice, I still think those spots are worth to visit again. I took bus to Cleveland Dam and Grouse Mountain. The Cleveland Dam was bulit in 1954, and it named after Ernest Albert Cleveland, LL.D., first chief commissioner of the Greater Vancouver Water District (1926-52), the Cleveland Dam sits atop the Capilano River Regional Park blocking Capilano Lake, which supplies approximately 40% of the Lower Mainland's fresh drinking water. I walked down to the viewpoint at the bottom of the hill to see the water fall and giant fir. It was a good walk on Saturday afternoon. Grouse Mountain was the next stop. I took the Red Skyride(it costs 37.60 Canadian dollars--it is pretty expensive) to the top of the mountain. I was regret to do that becuse it was foggy on the top. I couldn't get good ariel view of the city and its surroundings. However, I made this decision, and I should enjoy the consequeses. I saw a movie and took walk in the park for about 1 hour. It was dark when I got home. Nice to have a day out and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Going to Canada

I began my Canada visit on July 4th. I didn't choose this day for any reason (July 4th is the Independence Day in the States). After 12 hours, I arrived in Vancouver. It was a long fly, and I barely slept for about 1 hour. May be I get used to take long distance flight. I still felt awakening when I passed the custom inspection. It didn't take me long to find the guest house that I will be staying for 3 weeks. However, it reauired to change bus and train 2 times. It was not a challenge for me, and all I need was to read sign and ask questions. After I got the guest house, I had a dinner at a Vietnanmese restaurant. Then, I hit the bed to rejuvenate my body for the next day's schedule.

(A prudent question is one half of wisdom)。

New Possibilities with Information Technologies(NPTI),若文章內容為數位學習績效評估,則列為Assessment and E-folios,但本人建議大會可在針對論文研究的對象再加以說明,如高等教育、中等教育或企業等,這樣更方便參與者可以選擇欲參加討論的場次。

Las Vegas

I was in Las Vegas for a convention from 3/3 to 3/7. The conference was held in RIVIERA casino & hotel. I was pretty lucky to present my paper on 3/4, the sencond day of conference. Thus, I could relax myself to enjoy the rest of meeting and, of course, play couple hands of game without too much stress. I have been Las Vegas three times, so basically I am familiar with the city of sin. I didn't go to those luxurious casino and hotel on the Las Vegas Strip because I visited them three years ago. It is really a good experience to attend conference. I believe I have got some idea for my next research project.

San Francisco!

APPLE Computers

Information overloaded

The fast development of computer technology gives people tremendous amount of resources to obtain information quickly; for instance, the World Wide Web (WWW) is widely acknowledged as a resource, which can bring many gigabytes information to us. In addition, e-mail and newsletters provide us to a way to learn new knowledge. People are forced to accept information without filtering. The phenomena create a problem- information overload. Wheatley sates that the information should be free to generate, communicate, and interpret, and we should “recognize information's essential role in supporting self-organization” (p.166). If we fail to do so, “we will be unable to survive in this new world” (p. 166). Personally, I partially agree with her. I believe the distribution of information should be a freedom. However, a filter system should be created to teach people how to screen the information and convert to useful pieces. Today, there are so many fake information distributing on the internet. If we accept them without judge, a negative effect might happen. For example, not long ago, I remember there is an e-mail that using a famous company’s name to inform users a hidden virus file in their computer system. Many users believe that and they delete that file. Then, a serious problem happens. Their computers are crash. This story gives us a lesson. We live in the age of information overload; we need to verify the information. In other words, a self-awareness skill is necessary.

On-line university

In U.S., on-line degree is recognized and offered at various programs. I visited University of Phoenix three years ago and had chance to talk to people there. The school has more than 160,000 students and offered on-line degree from Associate to Docorate. The faculty members are mostly part-time and have "practical" experiences. I believe students can get good education through the on-line universities because on-line schhols do set certain requirements for students and I know they fail students frequently. However, people are worry about the quality of on-line education. I think this should not be the issue to worry. Most students take on-line courses because they have no other option and they realy want to learn something that can help them to get good job. I also believe on-line university is a trend that will prosper and then gradually substitute some physical classrooms.

E-learning for seniors

Google document

It supprised me when I saw Google document. It means that we may no more need to purchase office software in order to do word editing, presentation slides, and spreadsheets. The web has become a platform that provides all sorts of applications and services. I guess sooner or later software makers will need to move their battle field to the web instaed of developing stand-alone application.

Fish Philiosophy (魚販哲學)

I first visited Seattles Pike Place Fish market in the spring of 1995. I saw fishmongers throwing fish and shouting loudly, and customers were invited to be part of their fun. The scenes are deeply rooted in my memory. Until I read the book, Fish: A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improved Results, I had no idea about the purpose of their actions and attitudes. Lundin, Paul, and Christensen (2000) used a story to describe that the extraordinary fish philosophy can be successfully applied to the process of organizational change. The authors listed four elements that are embedded in the fish philosophy, which are (1) Choose your attitude, (2) Play, (3) Make their day, and (4) Be present. In my opinion, these four powerful fundamentals are not only applicable to organizations, but are also suitable to deal with our daily life. The story told by the authors was about a dedicated manager, Mary Jane, who wanted to change the working environment and attitudes of the people on the third floor in the First Guarantee Company. The authors described the third floor as a “toxic energy dump.” The employees had a serious morale problem. One day, she visited the world famous Pike Place Fish market. The head fishmonger, Lonnie, inspired her with the four ground rules that made his place a well-known spot in the world. Mary Jane realized that the fish philosophy would help her get rid of her department's terrible reputation. All employees engaged in the change and sought for solutions. Finally, they formed four teams based on the four elements and implemented their proposed ideas.

此外,政府也將推廣HDTV(High Definition TV,高畫質電視)至所有家戶。

(George Hotz: He believes information should be free!)

Hong Kong

On my way returned to Taiwan, I visited my cousin in Hong Kong. After three days, I realized how happy and lucky I am to live in Taiwan. Most people reside in small apartment where they may sleep, work, and eat in the same room. Also, the tall apartment and business buildings has brought negative effects to the air quality. Dusts accumulate faster more than you can imagine. The name of oriental pearl to me is just a beautiful night scene. I will not choose to live there.

Travelling in Scotland

This picture was taken in a Castle near Loch Ness, Scotland. I was excited to visit the Loch Ness, because the moster story has been rooted in my heart since I was little. It is always nice to travel, especially to a place where I really want to visit. I didn't see the monster, but I wasn't sure the monster saw me or not.
